Oil Rig Workers | S-W-MS-W-M

Oil Rig Workers

Posted on Aug 04, 2013

We often get a lot of questions about the industry that we are in. We have answered a lot of questions regarding what we do, but we wanted to highlight some of the workers that use our products. We’re talking about those who work in the field, such as those that work on oil rigs or on refineries. This week we wanted to specifically highlight workers on oil rigs.

There are a lot of hard working men and women in our field, and we wanted to take a post to recognize those that work on oil rigs because some of you have been curious about this profession. Workers on oil rigs have long, grueling schedules and are often away from home for a couple to several weeks. Hopefully our day in the life of an oil rig worker gives you some better insight into what this profession is like.

Oil rig workers typically work 12 hour shifts for two weeks straight. After their two weeks is up, they typically get two weeks off for vacation. While the schedule may seem enticing, while they are on the oil rig, it is no easy task. Shifts usually involve a lot of heavy lifting in very hot or very cold temperatures. Due to the fact that these workers are on billion dollar platforms doing dangerous work, they do need to be certified in some important areas. Oil rig workers need to obtain an offshore survival and firefighting certificate as well as get caught up on all immunizations.

There are a number of different jobs one can perform on an oil rig, the main jobs on a rig include:

Roughneck: General manual labor workers, they often move heavy drilling equipment and supplies. They are also usually the ones to clean equipment and work areas.

Roustabout: Workers that are involved in the drilling process and move sections of pipe.

Helper: They assist the skilled workers, kind of like an apprentice. Learn electrician and welding work.

Painter: Rigs must be painted constantly as a means of protection from the elements. This is one of the more dangerous jobs on the rig as it requires the worker to be suspended by a harness.

Motorman: repair and maintain all moving parts such as generators and deck equipment.

Deckhand: Build tow lines, facilitate loading/unloading of cargo onto the rig

Assistant Chef: Helps prepare all of the meals on board the rig.

Oil rigs are a major source of employment for those that work in the oil and gas industry. They are full of hard working individuals and they help keep our economy going at an ever increasing speed. Hopefully this post was helpful for anyone looking to get into the oil and gas industry. Stay tuned for our next post as we talk about more professions in the industry.
